OK! Guys! Here is the blog I was waiting to write for you!
In Part 2 of the Lactic Acid series, we discussed the idea that lactate might not really be the enemy - in this post, we will dive into how it might be the furthest thing from our enemy!
George Brooks, a professor of integrative biology at UC Berkeley, reviews three major roles that lactic acid has: It’s a major source of energy; triggers forming additional glucose in the liver; and a signaling molecule, floating around our bodies and blood, affecting the expression of genes responsible for managing stress.
His studies have shown that lactate increases production of Brain-Derived Neurotropic Factor (BDNF) production, which supports neuron production in the brain.
Are you getting this??
AND! as a source for fuel, lactate improves the brain’s executive function immediately.
This works whether the lactate is is infused or generated via exercise!
The benefits are incredible! The brain thrives with lactic acid so much!
Scholars at the University of Bristol and University College London found that lactate triggers the release a hormone and neurotransmitter, norepinephrine, crucial for basic brain function.
Norepinephrine, helps control STRESS, PAIN, and APPETITE!
Norepinephrine even helps us get up and out of bed, all motivated, in the morning.
Let this sink it... right???
Ok here is the breakdown!
